Celebrities into (Ashtanga) Yoga

We all know about Madonna and her yoga compulsion! She has been a big proponent of yoga for years now and has probably influenced many a fan to visit a studio or two. Madonna has repeatedly articulated the benefits of yoga in interviews and television appearances. She has the body of a 20 year old and is over 50! Madonna practices Ashtanga yoga, which is a fast type of yoga that teaches synchronized breathing while simultaneously performing a series of yoga postures. The postures cause increased heart rate and internal heat that detoxes the internal organs and blood stream. It helps build up stamina and makes the body healthier and stronger with more muscle power.

Ricky Martin is another big proponent for yoga. He has found it instrument as a technique for restoring inner peace and relaxation. Ricky practices Hatha yoga on a daily basis both in a studio and at home.

Gwyneth Paltrow cites the benefits of yoga everywhere she can. She has a home studio and last year was featured on a episode of Oprah where we watched her sweat in a heated studio. She believes that yoga has given her a calmer and more centered life.

Meg Ryan has been practicing yoga for more than a decade. She practices yoga every day at home. She cites yoga as helping her focus on what is important in life. She uses it as a technique for meditation.

The well known boxer Evander Holyfield has been practicing yoga for years to keep him focused on his games and to help him concentrate in daily life. As yoga helps to make muscles more supple and keeps up your stamina and regulates your breathing, professional athletes such as Evander, benefit greatly from yoga.

Author and lecturer Dr. Wayne Dyer began practicing Bikram yoga two years ago at the age of 67! He claims he's an inch taller because it stretches the spine. He also is quoted to say that yoga doesn't just teach us to be flexible in our physical world, but to be flexible in our thinking and keeps us balanced. Bikram yoga is a series of 26 postures performed in a 105 degree heated studio.

Jennifer Aniston practices yoga almost every day and also talks openly about her practices in interviews and on television. She attributes yoga to staying lean and healthy. She admitted to even crying through poses as it's just been very cathartic for her.

Vin Diesel not only practices yoga on a regular basis but pilates too! He's been known to practice "doubles" when in a film (doubles means taking a 60 or 90-minutes yoga class twice in one day). That probably explains how the 43-year old actor has maintained his killer abs and chiseled physique.

Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran) practices yoga with celebrity yoga trainer Subodh Gupta, based in London. Simon is quoted as saying he is extremely happy with every aspect of the yoga program and would recommend it to anyone who wants a sensible approach to lifestyle change. (special thanks to a reader from the UK who gave me the skinny about Simon!)
